Introduction to Cyber Security(III): The OSI model.

THE OSI MODEL

The OSI Model is an acronym for the Open System Interconnection Model. It is a conceptual framework that is used to describe the functions of a networking system. It describes how different computer systems communicate with each other within a network or the internet. It shows and explains the process of data transmission. It is a standard that describes the architecture or layer of a network and its various segments.

Although, the modern internet now uses the TCP/IP model. Even with this, the OSI model is still widely used, as it helps to visualize and communicate how networks operate and helps isolate and troubleshoot networking problems.

There are 7 layers in the OSI model.

These layers can therefore be categorized into two that is, the host or software layer and the media or the hardware layer. The hierarchy of the OSI Model starts from the physical layer upwards. The first three below represent the media or hardware layer and the last three from the top to the bottom represent the host or the software layer, while the transport layer is known as the heart of the OSI model. The hardware and software layers are what are mostly used in their segment, literally and respectively. These models have each function that we would look at, one after the other.
